Diving is a very popular sport. The world has seen many divers come to prominence over the years. Many of these have become famous for their diving exploits, and have been immortalised in the form of films. These include:

  1. Jacques Cousteau – This Frenchman made his mark in the film industry with his diving exploits. He was one of the first divers to make use of underwater cameras. He also pioneered underwater filming techniques, and developed new techniques for the filming of underwater scenes.
  2. David McIntosh – This Canadian made a name for himself as a diver and stuntman. He made a name for himself with his stunt work in the film “The Abyss” in which he dived down to a depth of 1,000 feet, and then went on to dive down to a depth of 1 mile.
  3. James Cameron – This American made a name for himself in the film industry when he directed the film “Titanic”. This film won an Oscar for Best Film. It also won an Oscar for Best Sound Mixing. It is the most expensive film ever made. It was filmed entirely underwater.
  4. Jacques Yves Cousteau – This French man made a name for himself as an explorer. He was the first person to discover the sunken ship “Empress of Ireland”. He also discovered the lost city of Atlantis.
  5. Greg Louganis – This American made a name in the film industry with his gymnastic skills. He won Olympic gold medals in the 1976 Montreal Olympics, and again in the 1980 Moscow Olympics. He also won an Oscar for his role in the film “Chariots Of Fire”.
  6. Robert Ballard – This American made a name by discovering the wreck of the “Titanic”. He also discovered the wreck of the “Bismarck”.
  7. Michael Phelps – This American swimmer made a name for himself in his sport by winning numerous Olympic gold medals. He won the gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He has also won three gold medals in the 2004 Athens Olympics, and three gold medals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
  8. Ellen MacArthur – This Australian made a name for herself as a diver. She won two gold medals in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. She was the first woman to win a gold medal in a diving competition.
  9. Johnathan Kite – This American made a name as a diver in the film “Cast Away”. He played the part of Chuck Noland. He also appeared in the film “The Green Mile” and “Waterworld”.
  10. Felix Baumgartner – This Austrian made a name for himself as the first man to break the sound barrier while flying. He also made a name for himself in a different way. He became the first person to fly in space.
  11. Tom Hanks – This American made a name through his acting in films such as “Cast Away”, “Apollo 13”, “Forrest Gump”, and “Saving Private Ryan”. He won an Oscar for his role as Captain Apollo in “Apollo 13”.
